25 September 2026

Places to drive, and places to gather, are disappearing.

The Jimny has been built on the same honest formula since 1970: ladder frame, solid axles front and rear, part-time four-wheel drive with a low range. More people are buying one than ever. Fewer places will let them use it.

  • Forest roads are working roads

In Japan, forest roads exist to move timber, not for recreation. More and more of them are closed to general traffic.

  • Parking areas keep closing

The highway parking areas where car people used to meet are increasingly shut on weekend nights. They were never meant to host gatherings.

  • Rented places come with someone else's rules

Book a slot, arrive in opening hours, follow the operator's programme. There is almost nowhere you can simply decide to go.

So we are buying land and building a private field made for this from the start.

What J-OWNERS HOKUTO is

A members-only field in Hokuto, Yamanashi, for Jimny owners. Not a car park, not an off-road course. A base you can drop into thinking "someone might be there today". Gate, security cameras and a membership system, so only registered members use it.

What you can do here

  • Camp & sleep in your car

Drive up after work, sleep where you park, talk to whoever is there in the morning.

  • Campfires

In designated places, using designated methods, with fire-fighting equipment on hand.

  • Meet-ups

Someone is around on ordinary weekends too. This is not a venue that only opens for events.

  • Off-road driving

Inside the designated area, during designated hours. No night driving. Closed after heavy rain.

  • Maintenance, builds and parts

Hand over the spare OEM part, ask about a lift or tyre choice. Same car, so the conversation starts halfway.

  • Wash bay

Planned. Somewhere to clean the car that keeps detergent and oil out of the stream.

Why only Jimny

We are not opening this to SUVs in general. Tyres, lift kits, servicing, breakdowns, loading, camping, forest roads, parts, builds — owners of the same car already share all of it. One model as a common language is what turns a group of users into an actual community.

People who have kept an old one running for decades and people who just bought their first new one end up in the same place. What connects them is not which Jimny they drive, but that they like the car.

ELIGIBLE MODELS

Transmission and generation have nothing to do with eligibility. A completely stock car counts the same as a heavily built one.

Different generations, different builds, same place. This is the picture J-OWNERS HOKUTO is being built around.
Planned layout of J-OWNERS HOKUTO. An ACTIVE SIDE with the off-road area, car-stay area, maintenance and custom area, member parking and wash bay; a QUIET SIDE with a riverside camp area, a car-free quiet area, a bushcraft area and a pet-friendly area with a dog run; a central campfire ground, Starlink and lighting, toilets and water. A separate night entrance keeps late arrivals away from the quiet side.
A working zoning plan shaped by requests we received from owners. Not a final site plan. Labels are in Japanese. View full size

The image scrolls sideways.

Owners asked. We redrew the plan.

"Keep the driving area away from the camping area." "Give us somewhere quiet." "Stop late arrivals driving through the camp side at night." "Separate the area for people with dogs." Those messages came in through our official LINE account, and the plan now splits the site into an ACTIVE SIDE and a QUIET SIDE, with a separate night entrance, the car-stay area near the gate, and riverside camping placed on higher ground because mountain streams rise fast.

This is a working plan, not a finalised site layout. The land purchase is still in progress and the final arrangement depends on the terrain and where the site meets the road. Felling and stump removal on the site have already started. The site is over 5,000 m² beside a river in Hokuto; boundaries, access and drainage will be surveyed once the purchase completes. Areas, names and specifications may change.

MEMBERSHIP

Who can join

Membership is open to Jimny owners. Nationality is not a condition — if you live in Japan and have a Jimny registered here, you can be a member like anyone else. Announcements, the member site and day-to-day conversation on the field are in Japanese.

You do not need to own the car yet to back the project. Delivery waits are long in Japan right now, and the field is planned to open in March 2027, so an order placed today may well arrive in time. Vehicle details are registered when membership starts.

  • CarJimny, Jimny Sierra, Jimny Nomade or Mazda AZ-Offroad, registered in Japan
  • BuildAny state of modification, including none at all. AT or MT
  • AloneSolo visits are welcome and expected — and so are the people you bring
  • FeeAround ¥39,600 per year after the crowdfunding period (planned)
  • LanguageOperated in Japanese. We can answer questions in English by email or LINE
  • From abroadYou can support the project, but using the field requires a Jimny registered in Japan. Message us before backing if you are outside Japan

Open around the clock.
Driving only at set hours.

The aim is for members to come and stay whenever they like. Driving is a different matter: designated area, designated hours, never at night. What we are after is not unlimited freedom but a place that stays open for years because people keep to the rules.

  • Off-road driving only inside the designated area and during designated hours. No night driving
  • No revving, unnecessary idling, horns or loud audio at night
  • No unnecessary speed anywhere on site. Vehicles that are excessively loud may be restricted
  • Take your rubbish home
  • No waste oil, fuel or coolant on the ground or in the water. A car found leaking oil stops driving. Absorbent material kept on site
  • Servicing in the designated area only. Driving areas are limited and the forest is off limits
  • Driving areas close temporarily when the ground is too wet to take it
  • Campfires in designated places and by designated methods, with fire-fighting equipment ready
  • Reach the stream by the marked route only. No rubbish, detergent or oil in or near the water
  • Membership is withdrawn from anyone who will not follow this

We are borrowing a place in nature. The cars and the people are guests here.

Rules exist so the freedom survives. We use a stretch of wild land and a stream in Hokuto, which means the sound, the water and the soil all have to be in the same state when we come back next week.

To the people living nearby, this has to read as a place that is run properly, not as a crowd of loud cars that turned up next door. That is a condition for the project continuing at all. The member site will also list local restaurants, hot springs and fuel stations, and we will publish what we do to keep the site and its surroundings clean.

Vehicles that do not meet Japanese road-safety standards
will not be admitted.

The field is private land, but the roads that get you there are public. This will not be a place where cars that cannot legally be on the road come together. The line is not "modified or not" — it is road-legal or not.

NOT ADMITTED

  • [Passenger-registered] Tyres protruding 10 mm or more beyond the fenderThe 22 June 2017 amendment allows tyres to protrude by less than 10 mm, but only on vehicles registered for passenger use. Under 10 mm is fine.
  • [Cargo-registered] Tyres protruding at allThat amendment covers passenger vehicles only. Cargo-registered vehicles (4- and 1-number plates) are excluded, and even 1 mm of protrusion fails the standard.
  • Wheels, wheel nuts or centre caps protruding beyond the fenderNot allowed on either. The 10 mm allowance covers tyres only.
  • Exhausts that exceed the noise limits
  • Lighting that does not meet the standards
  • Any other non-compliant condition

WELCOME

  • Lift kitsWithin what the standards allow.
  • Tyre and wheel changesFine as long as protrusion stays within the limits above, which differ by registration type.
  • Bumpers, roof racks, winches and the like
  • A completely stock carIt counts the same as a heavily built one.

Whether a car counts as passenger- or cargo-registered is shown in the 用途 field of its Japanese registration document (車検証). Among Jimnys, the JA11 and JA12 vans are typically cargo-registered, while the JB23, JB43, JB64 and JB74 are typically passenger-registered — but it varies by individual car. Ask us on LINE if you are unsure.

The membership terms will set out the vehicle conditions, and we may check a car visually on arrival. We may ask to see the vehicle registration document; we check only that it matches the car, and we do not record or retain what it says. A car whose compliance cannot be confirmed may be asked to wait until it is. How this works in practice will be settled before opening, with input from members.

BRINGING PEOPLE WITH YOU

Bring your family.
Bring your friends.

This is a Jimny-only field, but it is not meant to be a place where owners come alone. Camping, campfires and the evening around them are better with the people you brought.

  • Passengers ride free

Anyone arriving as a passenger in a member's Jimny is planned to be included at no extra charge, up to the vehicle's seating capacity. In a four-seat Jimny that means three people alongside the member. Children under junior-high age are planned to be free. Beyond the seating capacity, a per-visit fee for additional guests is being considered.

  • Arriving in a different car

Vehicles driven into the field are planned to be limited to the eligible models. But friends and family will sometimes arrive separately, so we are planning a parking area for non-Jimny guest vehicles so they can still reach the site. Other models would not enter the off-road area or the Jimny camping sites.

  • When your Jimny is in the shop

Servicing and inspections happen. If you are temporarily in a courtesy car, we are considering allowing a one-off entry with advance notice. Off-road driving would not be included; camping, campfires and the company would be.

Jimny decides what drives here.
Not who comes with you.

Fees, guest rules and parking arrangements for non-Jimny vehicles will be finalised once the land is acquired and the operating plan is set, and published before opening.

Not a concept. We have cleared land here before.

This is not our first plot. We already run YUUKA, a private field of roughly 5,000 m² of wild land in Hokuto that we cleared ourselves — cutting grass, felling trees, dealing with deadfall, building the track, securing water, putting in the facilities to stay overnight.

  • 2of 3 agreed

The site is over 5,000 m² beside a river in Hokuto. We are negotiating with three landowners, have agreement from two, and registration is under way. Work on the ground — felling and stump removal — has already begun. This project was covered by Best Car Web and Yahoo! News Japan in September 2026.

Questions

Anything not covered here, ask us directly — English is fine.

Which cars are eligible?

Every generation of the Suzuki Jimny since 1970 — the LJ series (LJ10, LJ20, LJ50), the SJ series (SJ10, SJ30), the JA series (JA71, JA11, JA12, JA22) and the JB series (JB23, JB33, JB43, JB64) — plus Jimny Sierra (JB74 and earlier) and Jimny Nomade (JC74). The Mazda AZ-Offroad, the Jimny's sibling car, counts too. Transmission and state of modification make no difference.

Do I need to live in Japan?

To use the field, yes in practice: membership requires a Jimny registered in Japan, and the site is in Hokuto, Yamanashi. Nationality is not a condition. If you live in Japan and own an eligible car, you can join like anyone else.

Can I back the project from outside Japan?

The CAMPFIRE page, the pledge process and the rewards are handled in Japanese and geared to Japan. Message us on LINE or by email before pledging and we will confirm what is possible for you, including reward delivery.

Do I need to speak Japanese?

The field, the member site and day-to-day conversation are in Japanese. We can answer questions in English by email or LINE, and other Jimny owners tend to communicate fine regardless of language.

Is it really open 24 hours?

The aim is for members to enter and stay at any hour. Off-road driving is different: designated area, designated hours, and never at night. A gate, security cameras and a membership system control access.

Can I bring my family or friends?

Yes. Anyone arriving as a passenger in a member's Jimny is planned to be included at no extra charge, up to the vehicle's seating capacity, and children under junior-high age are planned to be free. Guests arriving in a different car will have a separate parking area, though non-eligible vehicles would not enter the off-road area or the Jimny camping sites. Fees and guest rules will be finalised before opening.

Can I try the field once without becoming a member?

Yes. The FOUNDING SUPPORTER B reward (¥15,000, limited to 50) includes a one-day visit after the field opens. It does not include membership or the annual fee — the idea is that you can see the place for yourself before deciding. Details of how and when the visit runs will be announced before opening.

Do I have to drive off-road?

No. This is not an off-road course. Camping, sleeping in your car, campfires and simply spending time there are all normal ways to use the field.

What does membership cost?

Around ¥39,600 per year is planned after the crowdfunding period. The ¥50,000 FOUNDING LIFE MEMBER reward includes three years of fees and is limited to 50 people, with no further sales planned.

Do the rewards give me any rights over the land?

No. No reward confers ownership, a share of ownership, a lease or any other right over the land or a parking space. They are membership and commemorative numbers used within the field.

What happens if the goal is not reached?

The campaign is All-or-Nothing. It only proceeds if the ¥7,300,000 goal is reached by 25 October 2026 at 23:59 JST. If it is not, every pledge is refunded in full.

When does it open?

March 2027 is the plan. Land purchase and first-stage groundwork are scheduled for November and December 2026, with facilities and the member system built out in January and February 2027.

Are other sites planned?

They are concepts, not commitments. J-OWNERS NETWORK is an idea for a set of bases around Japan — Nose in Osaka, Sendai in the north and Fukuoka in Kyushu are the regions under consideration. No land has been bought or chosen for any of them, none has been approved or scheduled, and no nationwide rollout has been decided. The next base gets considered only after Hokuto is funded and actually running. Funds raised in this campaign go only to Hokuto.

Can I come in a modified car?

Yes, as long as it is road-legal. Lift kits, tyre and wheel changes, bumpers, roof racks and the like are welcome. Cars that do not meet Japanese road-safety standards will not be admitted. For tyres, the limit depends on how the car is registered, as shown in the 用途 field of its Japanese registration document. The 22 June 2017 amendment allows protrusion of less than 10 mm on vehicles registered for passenger use; cargo-registered vehicles (4- and 1-number plates) are excluded from that allowance, and even 1 mm of protrusion fails. Among Jimnys, the JA11 and JA12 vans are typically cargo-registered. The allowance also covers tyres only, so protruding wheels, wheel nuts or centre caps are not allowed on either. Exhausts over the noise limit and non-compliant lighting are also covered. The field is private land, but the roads that get you there are public, so being road-legal is a condition of entry.

Is this an official Suzuki project?

No. It is an independent community project run by Jimny owners, with no connection to Suzuki Motor Corporation. "Jimny" is a trademark of Suzuki Motor Corporation and model names are used for identification only.

J-OWNERS HOKUTO is not meant to be a single campsite. It is the first of several bases we hope to build around Japan, connected both on the ground and online. The next base gets considered only after Hokuto is funded, built and actually running, and only where the demand is there.
